Building community connections

The Platinum Jubilee provided a perfect opportunity for churches to prompt people in their communities to reflect on the significance of the Queen’s strong Christian faith.

In Weymouth in Dorset, St Aldhelm’s Church invited people they have connected with through their community outreach to a Jubilee lunch and screening of the Queen’s service of Thanksgiving. At the start of the pandemic, the church was involved in starting ‘Keep in Touch’, which provided practical support to local people. They also run CAP debt support – so they invited people from both these initiatives to the Jubilee lunch.

85 local people – mostly elderly – came along, and were welcomed with coffee and shortbread, before settling down to watch the Thanksgiving service on a large screen. They then took their seats at ‘hosted tables’ of ten to enjoy a delicious traditional British lunch and to toast the Queen.

Everyone who came along was presented with a copy of HOPE’s book, ‘Our Faithful Queen’, which shares the faith of our Christian Queen in a beautiful, engaging format. The event was a great success, enjoyed by everyone!
